Rose of Jericho
Rose of Jericho
Selaginella lepidophylla, also known as the Rose of Jericho, Desert Rose, or the Resurrection Plant is native to the desert regions of Central America and the Middle East. The heart of the Rose of Jericho’s mystique is its extreme resilience. The plant can completely desiccate during droughts, curling its branches inward, and becoming a seemingly lifeless ball of twigs. Yet, once it is reintroduced to water, it “resurrects,” unfolding and turning green within hours. This extraordinary cycle can be repeated over many years, symbolizing renewal and endurance.
The Rose of Jericho’s ability to rise from the state of the ‘dead’ has made it a symbol of hope and rebirth across various cultures. In the Christian tradition, it is associated with the resurrection of Christ, hence the name. In folk magic, it’s believed to bring peace, power, and protection from negative energy that attempts to enter the home.
It is best to rehydrate your plant in a shallow dish with water. After rehydration I like to use the water for energy cleansing. I have used the water both topically and in mop water. Some practitioners keep crystals, coins, and other symbolic objects in the water as the plant rehydrates for different spiritual purposes.
